Yesterday, the Council of Ministers approved the National Refugee Resettlement Program (PNR) in Spain for 2024, under which Spain makes the commitment to host up to 1,200 people throughout this year.
In 2022, a PNR was approved with a maximum quota of 1,200 people for resettlement throughout 2023, whose compliance is currently 90%, with people mainly from Turkey, Lebanon and Costa Rica. In 2024, the commitment is to welcome the same number of people, whose profiles will be determined according to their capacity for integration into Spanish society and the characteristics and suitability of the reception and integration resources available.
According to the Government, “the need to resort to this instrument has become more urgent in recent years, due to events such as the crisis in Afghanistan and Ukraine, which adds to the need to provide protection to people coming from Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Libya, Niger, Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt.”
“The commitment of the Government of Spain to this program is included in the global resettlement priorities identified by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the European Union,” the Council of Ministers continued. The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration is in charge of offering reception within the framework of the International Protection Reception System.
The execution of the PNR is governed by the Action Protocol prepared by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Interior and Inclusion, in agreement with the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This protocol determines and defines the selection criteria for people to be resettled, the recognition of international protection, transfers to Spain and the development by the Ministry of Inclusion of the reception program for refugees.
