‘Next Goal Wins’, the true story of coach Thomas Rongen
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The American film Next Goal Wins, directed and written by Taika Waititi and starring Michael Fassbender, Elisabeth Moss and Oscar Kightley, among others, has hit the cinema screens.

The true story of Dutch coach Thomas Rongen, who pulled off an almost impossible task in sport: he took the reins of the American Samoa national football team and tried to turn a dismal team into born winners. And it really happened in 2001, when Australia broke the world record for the biggest ever 31-0 thrashing in an international football match and the American Samoa football team became the laughing stock of the sporting world after this World Cup defeat.
