The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, will attend today, on behalf of the Government, the national tribute organised by the French Presidency to the former President of the European Commission Jacques Delors, government sources told Europa Press.
French President Emmanuel Macron has organised a national tribute for Friday in honour of Delors, who died on 27 December. The former foreign minister and then president of the European Commission is considered a key figure in the construction of Europe.
“A sad day for Europe,” Albares himself wrote on his X account after learning of his death. “The memory of Jacques Delors will remain with us forever, his legacy is taken up by every European who believes in a more united and fairer Europe,” he said.
The event is expected to be attended by several European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, Council President Charles Michel and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
