The ambassador of Thailand, Vosita Vorasaph, who last Friday hosted a reception to commemorate the anniversary of the birthday of the late King Bhumibol, expressed his intention to continue deepening bilateral relations with Spain.

After recalling the excellent relationship between the two royal houses, the ambassador expressed his intention to continue promoting the growth of ties between the two countries at all levels. He expressed particular satisfaction with the impetus given, during the Spanish Presidency of the EU, to the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and the launching of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement, which will culminate in 2025.

In a brief review of bilateral relations, the ambassador said that Spain and Thailand have grown a great deal to consolidate a very solid partnership in all areas. In this regard, he gave as examples the 5th round of political consultations between Foreign Ministers, the collaboration in the Spanish-Thai Forum or the participation of Spanish companies from the agro-industrial sector in the Spain-Thailand Innovation & Tech Dialogue Forum,

Vosita Vorasaph identified the digital, technology and defence sectors as “the keys to our sustainable economic growth”. He encouraged Spanish businessmen to participate in the development of Thailand’s Economic Corridor, which aims to boost investment in four regions of the country and connect the South China Sea with the Bay of Bengal.

He also pointed out his objective to continue promoting mutual knowledge with actions aimed at fostering contact between the two civil societies. Among the actions taken by the Embassy to this end, he listed various cultural activities, Thai boxing exhibitions, the organisation of food shows and Thailand’s participation in the Vic Oriental Film Festival.

Thailand has recently opened two honorary consulates in the Canary Islands and Barcelona, which Vorasaph said will play “a very valuable role in cooperation with Spain”.

The reception was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as the Director General of North America, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific, Javier Salido; the Ambassadors’ Introducer, María Sebastián de Erice; and the Director of Casa Asia, Javier Parrondo; together with representatives of the Madrid City Council; numerous ambassadors, mainly Asian; businessmen and Thais residing in Spain.
