The Diplomat
Argentina’s ambassador to Spain, Ricardo Alfonsín, has ended his mission and returned to Argentina, coinciding with the inauguration of the new president of the Republic, Javier Milei.
Pending the appointment of new ambassadors by the incoming government, the Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission, Roberto Bosch, will take over the running of the Embassy as Chargé d’Affaires a.i.
Ricardo Alfonsín, son of Argentina’s former president Raúl Alfonsín (1983-1989), was himself a candidate for the radical Union for Social Development alliance in the 2011 presidential elections, which were won by Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
His appointment as ambassador to Spain was not without controversy among his supporters, as he was appointed by former Peronist president Alberto Fernández. Alfonsín attributed his acceptance of the post to the need to ‘defend the image of openness and dialogue of President Fernández’.
