The Ministry of the Interior has committed to contributing almost 500,000 euros to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to carry out projects in the thematic areas of assisted voluntary return and reintegration and integrated border management.

The agreement, signed in Madrid by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez, and by the Head of Mission of the IOM in Spain, María Jesús Herrera Ceballos, and in force since last December 11, develops the Framework Agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the International Organization for Migration of December 17, 2009, which establishes continued collaboration in the orderly and humane management of migrations.

Based on the agreement, published this past Wednesday by the Official State Gazette (BOE), the Ministry undertakes to provide financial support to the IOM – associated with the United Nations and based in Geneva – to carry out projects that are part of the thematic area of assisted voluntary return and reintegration and in that of integrated border management.

Specifically, the Ministry will provide financial aid of 496,535 euros, distributed in 346,535 euros for the Voluntary Return and Reintegration Project from Morocco for migrants in vulnerable situations and 150,000 euros for a project to support the Spanish authorities in the management of migratory flows to Spain. Interior will pay the contribution through a single disbursement.

The agreement will be in force until December 31, 2024 and, in any case, will remain in force until the completion of all projects and activities. IOM may extend the duration of one or more of the projects if necessary, provided that said extension does not imply expenses that exceed the amount of the indicated contribution. IOM will receive and administer the contribution in accordance with its regulations, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures and will be subject exclusively to the external and internal audit procedures provided for in the financial regulations, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures of the organization.
