The Diplomat
Twelve Spanish diplomats, who were currently first class plenipotentiary ministers, have been promoted to the professional category of ambassador, according to twelve royal decrees published on Thursday in the Official State Gazette.
Among those promoted, all of them with a long professional career and some of them close to retirement age, is the MP Agustín Santos, who was the ‘number two’ in Sumar’s candidacy in the last general elections and who previously held the post of Permanent Representative of Spain to the UN in New York.
The following have also been promoted to ambassadorial posts: Alfonso Sanz Portolés, currently diplomatic adviser to the King’s Household; the former undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Cristóbal González-Aller; and the ambassadors to the Czech Republic, Alberto Moreno; and to Jamaica, Diego Bermejo.
Also promoted were José María Ferré, former ambassador to Lebanon; Alfonso Portabales, former ambassador to Nigeria; José María Matres, former ambassador to Indonesia; Enrique Asorey, former ambassador to Gabon; Luis Antonio Calvo, former ambassador to the Philippines; Gerardo Bugallo, former ambassador to the Holy See; and Soledad Fuentes, former ambassador to Niger.
