The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, received yesterday at the Ministry headquarters her counterpart from the Republic of Iraq, Thabit Mohammad Saeed Al-Abbasi, with whom she discussed military cooperation, and Spain’s help in training the Iraqi troops.
As reported by the Department of Defense in a press release, Robles and the Iraqi Defense Minister reviewed the Force and, after the interpretation of the national anthems, both delegations greeted each other. Present on behalf of the Spanish delegation were the Chief of the Defense Staff, Admiral General Teodoro López Calderón, and the Secretary General of Defense Policy, Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez. The Iraqi minister was accompanied, among others, by the ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in Spain, Salih Husain
During the meeting, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, Robles and Al-Abbasi addressed military cooperation between both countries in terms of training, equipment and intelligence exchange and the Iraqi minister praised Spain’s support for Iraq in its fight against terrorism. Robles congratulated her counterpart on the Iraqi army’s victory over ISIS and praised her efforts to rebuild the country.
The two ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation between their armies and discussed sending Iraqi officers to Spain for training and the arrival of Spanish instructors to Iraq to train Iraqi troops.
