Until 7 January 2024, the Teatro Español in Madrid presents the play El silencio en Bodas de sangre, after its world premiere on 14 December in Shanghai.
This play is the world’s first production of Federico García Lorca’s Bodas de Sangre from an oriental perspective. It is a multidisciplinary play created by artists from Japan, China and Spain, planned and produced by VertebrART in co-production with Teatro Español. The show employs various forms of expression, such as flamenco, acting, contemporary dance, live music and sound.
The mix between the strength and passion of flamenco and the serenity and mysticism of the Orient is what makes this international collaborative production unique.
In this reinterpretation of Bodas de sangre directed by Hiroshi Koike, a leading contemporary theatre director in Japan, only four characters have been retained. Koike emphasises his favourite aesthetic concept: “Silence is everything”. In the Buddhist canon is the following sentence: “The Buddha said: It is not sayable. It cannot be said. With the passage of time and historical changes, the concept of “the unsayable” has permeated the philosophy and behaviour of modern Eastern people.
In today’s world, it is also the case that silence is the norm, but it is in silence that people perceive themselves most acutely. From this perspective, “silence” also becomes a source of resistance and hope. Tickets for this show can be purchased at this link.
