The Government of Spain rejected yesterday “in a blunt manner”, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the actions carried out by the Public Ministry of Guatemala that it considers “an attack against democracy” and represent “a serious violation of the will of the Guatemalan people freely expressed at the polls”.

The statement “proclaims the support of the Spanish Executive for the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo, and demands that “all Guatemalan institutions respect the results of the polls and guarantee the peaceful transfer of power.”

The Public Ministry of Guatemala yesterday presented the results of its investigation against the Semilla Movement party for an alleged crime of money laundering and insisted on the withdrawal of immunity from the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo, who led that party.

The head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity (FECI), Rafael Curruchiche, explained that the investigation has determined seven findings, mainly with respect to the detailed reports of income and expenses of the Semilla Movement, as well as receipts that remained unidentified.

“Seven findings of violation of electoral regulations were confirmed,” he explained in a press conference, adding that there are also missing documents to pay, such as interest-free loans, signed by the general secretary, Andrés Pérez Álvarez.
