The Iranian authorities would be willing to resolve through diplomatic channels the case of the Spanish citizen Santiago Sánchez, who has been imprisoned in that country for more than a year, according to The Diplomat, according to reliable sources.
The sources consulted assured that this issue “can be dealt with in two ways: through the courts or through amicable channels” and underlined their impression that Tehran could reach an extra-judicial agreement because “considers Spain to be a friendly country” with which the theocratic regime is interested in maintaining good relations.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry assures that it is in contact with the Iranian authorities demanding the immediate release of Sánchez, who is being held in Tehran’s Evin prison.
The former Spanish military officer was arrested by the Iranian police in the Aichi cemetery in the city of Saqqez for taking photos of the grave of the activist Mahsa Amini, the young Iranian woman of Kurdish origin who was arrested and tortured by the Islamic religious police for not wearing the veil correctly.
