The diplomat Jorge Notivoli will be the new head of the Gibraltar Office, following the dismissal of Javier Benosa from that position, decided by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, a month after this diplomat published an article critical of the amnesty. that the Government projected.
As The Diplomat learned from reliable sources, Notivoli will immediately take charge of the Office, at a time when the Spanish Government seems willing to reach an agreement with the United Kingdom to finalize the negotiations between that country and the European Commission on the future of Gibraltar after Brexit.
Jorge Notivoli, was currently assigned as an advisor in the International team of the Presidency of the Government, and has not had a direct relationship with Gibraltar until now, except for the issues that may have arisen in the years in which he was assigned as an advisory member in the Ministry of the Interior, between 2013 and 2016.
The new head of the Gibraltar Office entered the Diplomatic Career in 2003 and since then, in addition to the aforementioned positions, he has been stationed in Finland, as well as in the Spanish Embassies in Oman and Belgium, where he has held second positions.
Notivoli will report directly to the State Secretary of the European Union, Pascual Navarro, with whom, according to reliable sources consulted by The Diplomat, Benosa sometimes had opposing positions regarding the progress of negotiations on the future of Gibraltar.
The official position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that the change in the Office, which coincides with the appointment as ambassador to Serbia of Juan José Sanz, special delegate of the department for the Campo de Gibraltar, responds to the desire to have a new team in the final stage of the aforementioned negotiations.
