Thirteen of the 22 ministers who will form the new Government of Pedro Sánchez repeat in the Cabinet, although only the four vice-presidents and the heads of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Defense and Agriculture keep their portfolios. Five others change their portfolios or add new competences. Nine of the ministers are new, among them the four corresponding to the Sumar quota, in addition to Yolanda Díaz. These are the 22 ministers -twelve women and ten men- chosen by Pedro Sánchez.
First Vice-President and Minister of Economy
Graduate in Law and Economics. Commercial technician of the State, she was Director General for the Defense of Competition from 2004 to 2006. In the European Commission she has held the positions of deputy director general for Competition (2006-2010); director general for the Internal Market (2010-2014); and director general for the Community Budget (2014-2018). She is repeating in the position.
Second Vice-President and Minister of Labour
Labor lawyer. Founder and leader of Sumar since 2022. She has always been a member of the PCE and has been a member of Esquerda Unida, Alternativa Galega de Esquerdas, EnMarea, Podemos and Unidas Podemos. His father, Suso Díaz, was general secretary of CCOO in Galicia, and his uncle Xosé, former deputy in the Galician Parliament for the BNG. She is repeating in the position.
Third Vice-President and Minister of Ecological Transition
Degree in Law. Before moving into politics, she was president of the Advisory Board of the Momentum for Change Initiative of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat. Between 2008 and 2011, with the Zapatero Government, she was Secretary of State for Climate Change. Subsequently (2014-2018) she was director of the IDDRI in Paris. She is repeating in the position.
María Jesús Montero
Fourth Vice-President and Minister of Finance
Degree in Medicine from the University of Seville. She was a member of the communist youth during her student days. Already in the PSOE, she was part of the Committee of Guarantees that forced in 2016 the resignation of the then secretary general, Pedro Sánchez, in his first stage. She was then close to his rival, Susana Díaz. She is repeating in the position.
Minister of the Presidency and Justice
Graduate in Law. He was number one in his class, both in the General Course of Advocacy of the Escuela Práctica Jurídica and in the Special Course of Labor Law of the Escuela de Práctica Jurídica. He is the person Sánchez trusts the most. His solid legal training has allowed him to be the architect of the Amnesty Law. He repeats in the position, to which he adds Justice.
Minister of the Interior
Graduate in Economic Law. He began his career as a judge in Santoña in 1987. He served as head of the Central Court of Instruction No. 5 of the National Court between 2003 and 2006; president of the Criminal Chamber of the National Court (2012-2013); and member of the General Council of the Judiciary (2013-2018). He was deputy for Cádiz in the last legislature. He repeats in the position.
Minister of Defense
Degree in Law. She entered the Judicial Career with the number one of her promotion. She has held numerous positions as Judge and Magistrate, being the first woman to preside over a Contentious Chamber and the third to join the Supreme Court. She entered politics in 1993, with the PSOE of Felipe González, although she has never had a party card. She repeats in the position.
Minister of Agriculture
Graduate in Law and Inspector of Labor and Social Security.He has been advisor to the Junta de Andalucía on two occasions.He is fluent in English, French and Italian. Between 1986 and 1993 he was a member of the European Parliament.Vice-President of the Foreign Affairs Committee (1987-1989) and Vice-President of the European Socialist Group (1991-1993).He was also Spanish Ambassador to Morocco (2004-2010) and to the European Union (2010-2011). He repeats in the post.
José Manuel Albares
Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation
Law graduate and career diplomat.He was posted in Colombia, France and the Permanent Representation of Spain to the OECD.He was Ambassador of Spain in France and Monaco, and Secretary General for International Affairs, EU, G20 and Global Security in the Cabinet of Sánchez after the motion of censure that he won over Mariano Rajoy. He repeats in the position.
Minister of Education and Sport / Government Spokesperson
Graduated in Teaching, although she never practiced, she belongs to the generation that went to university in the economic crisis of the 90’s and that led her to all kinds of precarious jobs.She joined the PSOE, of which she has been spokesperson until now, coming from UGT.She has been national and regional deputy, councilor of the City Council of Zaragoza and delegate of the Government in Aragon, among other positions. She repeats in the position, to which she adds Sport.
Minister of Science and Universities
She is a Telecommunications Engineer.She was a councilwoman in the Gandía City Council (2011-2015), where she would end up being mayor between 2015 and 2021.She was also provincial deputy of Valencia (July 2015-May 2017) and member of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Valencia (January 2020-July 2021).She repeats in the position, to which she adds Universities.
Minister of Housing
Degree in Law. She was senator for the province of Ciudad Real (2004-2007); Deputy for the province of Ciudad Real in the Congress of Deputies (2011-2019); Mayor of Puertollano (June 2019-July 2021). Since July 2021 she was Minister of Territorial Policy and Government Spokesperson.
José Luis Escrivá
Minister of Digital Transformation
Degree in Economics.He has been head of the ECB Monetary Policy Division (1999-2004); president of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AiReF) (2014-2020), president of the EU Network of Independent Fiscal Institutions (2015-2019). Until now he was minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
Ángel Víctor Torres
Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory
Graduate in Hispanic Philology.Torres worked as a secondary school teacher in several high schools in the islands until 1999, when he was elected councilor of the City Council of Arucas and mayor four years later.He was deputy for the PSOE between 2009 and 2011. Subsequently he was again mayor of Arucas (2011-2015) and president of the Canary Islands Government in 2019. New in the Government.
Minister of Industry
Degree in Business Administration and Management.He holds an MBA from ESADE.He began his professional career at the Port of Barcelona.After becoming Mayor of Barcelona (2006-2011), he was a member of the Board of Directors of AENA and of the Advisory Board of AGBAR. Currently, he chaired the telecommunications satellite operator Hispasat. New in the Government.
Minister of Children and Youth
Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. She began her political career in 2007 as a councilor in the City Council of Rivas Vaciamadrid, where she became first deputy mayor between 2015 and 2019.For the last four years she held a seat in the European Parliament, where she was vice-president of the Left Group. She is part of the Sumar quota. New in the Government.
Minister of Social Rights
B.A. in Political Science and Psychology. Bustinduy was one of the professors who formed the founding nucleus of Podemos.Expert in international affairs, he was coordinator of Podemos in the European Parliament.As a national deputy (2015-20220) he was the spokesman for his party in the Foreign Affairs Committee. He is part of Sumar quota. New in the Government.
Minister of Culture
Graduate in Economics and career diplomat. He arrived in Brussels in 2014 as a candidate of Iniciativa per Catalunya (ICV) to the European Parliament, where in 2004 he had already been an advisor to MEP Raül Romeva. In 2010 he joined the Diplomatic Career, where he was advisor to the secretary general of the Union for the Mediterranean, until 2014, when he requested leave of absence. He is part of Sumar quota. Minister of Health
Degree in Medicine. She was an anesthesiologist at the Doce de Octubre Hospital before becoming spokesperson for the Association of Medical Specialists of Madrid (AFEM). From there she came to politics with Podemos.Until now she was a deputy in the Assembly of Madrid, where she arrived in 2015, after revalidating her seat with Más Madrid, Íñigo Errejón’s party. She is part of the Sumar quota. New in the Government.
Minister of Social Security
Degree in Law and Master’s Degree in Tax Consultancy. She worked in the Department of Regulatory Development and Taxation of the Department of Economy and Finance of the Government of Navarra. She was Minister of Economy and Finance of the Government of Navarre at the proposal of the PSOE, under the presidency of María Chivite (2019-2023). New in the Government.
Minister of Equality
Degree in Law and PhD in Constitutional Law. She is a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Valladolid, a member of the legal team of the Institute of Latin American Studies at the Complutense University of Madrid, and a member of Forum XXI of the FIIAP of the Ministry of Public Administration for its relations with Latin America. Minister of Transportation
Degree in Law. Holds a course in Political Management. PSOE militant since 1990. He began his political career in the PSOE of Valladolid in 2004 as Deputy Secretary General of the Provincial Executive. He was mayor of Valladolid from 2015 to 2023. He was the rapporteur of the Socialist Group during the recent investiture debate of Pedro Sánchez. New in the Government.
