Tomorrow Tuesday at 16.30 at the headquarters of the European Commission in Spain, the Fundación Alternativas presents its Report on the state of culture in Spain 2023. Spain’s cultural presence in Europe.
The preparation of the 2023 edition of the ICE aims to accompany the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the second half of 2023. For this reason, it devotes its central theme to Spain’s cultural presence in Europe, with an analysis of its main parameters, lines of activity and forecasts for the future. The report provides data and highlights the presence of Spain’s cultural industries in the EU as a whole. It also highlights the value of Spanish creation in the different fields of culture, as well as market figures and its expansion in the digital economy.
The Fundación Alternativas has extensive experience in this type of studies. In addition to participating in European working groups to address issues such as the European status of the artist or the role of culture in the green transition, it has also been part of a consortium that has developed, at the proposal of the European Commission, a new method for measuring the presence of culture in the European economy, including the digital economy. This is the tenth edition of this report, which since 2011 has made it possible to study different cultural aspects and issues in depth, making the ICE the annual culmination of the multiple activities of the Observatory of Culture and Communication.
After welcoming remarks by Diego López Garrido, Executive Vice-President of the Fundación Alternativas, and María Aurora Mejía Errasquín, Director of the Coordination Office for the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, Inma Ballesteros will summarise the content of the report, Director of the Observatory of Culture and Communication of the Fundación Alternativas, followed by a round table discussion entitled Spain’s Cultural Presence in Europe, with the participation of Ana Gallego Cuiñas, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts and author of the chapter Gender, Dissidence in Spanish Creation and its Impact on Europe; Gustavo Guerrero, writer, editor of Gallimard and professor. Author of the chapter La traducción de las letras hispanas en Europa 2000-2022: Francia, Alemania e Italia; Domenec Ruiz Devesa, MEP (remote), and Ana Vázquez, Director of the Instituto Cervantes in Brussels (remote). The debate will be moderated by Inma Ballesteros, director of the Culture and Communication Observatory of the Fundación Alternativas.
