The number of Spanish university students in the United States broke a record in the 2022-2023 academic year, reaching 8,548 students, according to data from the ‘Open Doors’ Annual Report.
The report was published last Monday, the 13th, by the US Department of State in collaboration with the Institute for International Education (IIE) during International Education Week, which runs until the 17th.
The North American country was the favorite destination for international students, exceeding one million, which certifies the recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, which represented a setback in the arrival of foreign university students to the US.
According to the US Embassy in Madrid, among the reasons that young people value for studying in the United States is the wide academic offering with subjects and courses that are only available there. Other extra motivations are the improvement of English and fluency in the language and sports scholarships to pursue full-time studies while competing for their university.
The ‘Community Collage’ offers the possibility of carrying out higher vocational training studies of between 2 and 4 years. They are the previous step to entering university studies and it is another aspect that the study highlights as the reason that drives young people to study. In U.S.A.
Regarding the number of American students who arrived in Spain during the 2021-2022 academic year, ‘Open Doors’ indicates that it reached 188,753 and placed our country among the three preferred by US university students, behind Italy and the United Kingdom.
After the presentation of the study, the US ambassador to Spain, Julissa Reynoso, stated that the positive student mobility figures between the two countries are another reflection that bilateral relations “are stronger than ever.”
Reynoso stated that strengthening the educational collaboration of both countries allows them to jointly “address today’s pressing challenges, such as climate change, drought and ocean degradation.
Finally, the ambassador assured that the student exchange contributes to “a better understanding of our shared values and our common commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility for all.”
