Until 19th November, Teatro de la Zarzuela presents the opera version of José María Usandizaga’s lyrical drama Las golondrinas.
This lucid, passionate and surprising staging by Giancarlo del Monaco -one of the most celebrated directors on the international lyric scene- which already won the unanimous praise of critics and audiences at its premiere in 2016, also features the musical direction of one of the world’s musical heavyweights Juanjo Mena, who will lead a brilliant double cast, as well as the Coro Titular del Teatro and the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid.
Two casts will bring to life this triangle of love, jealousy and circus. The role of Cecilia, the cause of love and suspicion, also a victim, will be played by the mezzo-sopranos Ketevan Kemoklidze and María Antúnez; that of Lina, the young woman who sighs silently for Puck’s love, will come to life in the voices and gestures of the sopranos Raquel Lojendio and Sofía Esparza; that of the clown Puck, head of the acrobats hopelessly in love with Cecilia, whose lover he is, will be embodied by the baritones Gerardo Bullón and César San Martín; tenor Jorge Rodríguez-Norton and bass Javier Castañeda will complete the line-up of singers in the roles of Juanito and Roberto, Lina’s brother and father, respectively. In addition to the cast of singers, a troupe of circus performers will be constantly present on stage, performing their corresponding exercises throughout the drama.
