Casa de América, the Embassy of Chile and the Fundación Chile-Spain are organising today and tomorrow the event Dejadme la esperanza. A Poetic Encounter 50 years after the Coup d’état in Chile, which also marks the 87th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War.
There will be two dialogues and a poetry reading marathon featuring poets of the stature of Elicura Chihuailaf and Elvira Hernández. A concert by Mauricio Redolés will close the event.
Today, Monday, the events will begin at 6 p.m. with the dialogue What is killed or what do we kill when poets are murdered? On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Neruda, as well as the violent deaths of poets in the Spanish Civil War, the participants will outline their point of view in 5 minutes, while the rest of the time there will be discussion and reflection with the support of the audience. Participants will include Elvira Hernández, writer; Juan Carlos Mestre, poet, and Andrés Morales, poet. The moderator will be Alejandra del Río, poet. At 7.30 p.m. the poetry reading marathon will begin with a performance by Delight Lab, an art, design and experimentation collective and studio working with light, space and sound.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, also at 6 p.m., the dialogue will begin: 50 years after the coup d’état in Chile and 87 years after the Spanish Civil War. What is the legacy of these dates and of the dictatorships? What readings are made from poetry as a result of the 50th anniversary of the coup and 87 years after the Civil War? The poets will outline their point of view in 5 minutes and the rest of the time there will be discussion and reflection with the support of the audience. Elicura Chihuailaf, poet; Luis García Montero, narrator and essayist; Elvira Hernández, writer; and Mauricio Redolés, Chilean poet and musician, will participate. The moderator will be Alejandra del Río, poet. At 7 p.m. it will be the turn of the concert by Mauricio Redolés, entitled Memoria, resistencia, poesía y rock and roll.
