The autonomous communities of Madrid and Navarre are among the three longest-living regions in Europe, according to Eurostat.

According to the latest data from the European Statistical Office, Eurostat, the Community of Madrid (85.4 years) and the Autonomous Community of Navarra (84.8 years) are the second and third longest-living regions in Europe, closely followed by other Spanish regions such as Castilla y León (84.3 years), Cantabria and the Basque Country (both with 84.0) and Galicia (83.9).

These data correspond to 2021, the year in which life expectancy at birth in the EU was 80.1 years. In the case of women, life expectancy was 82.9 years, 5.7 years more than that of men, who averaged 77.2 years.

Among the 242 NUTS 2 regions (the second category of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) for which data are available, the list is headed by the Swiss canton of Ticino (85.7), followed by the Spanish regions of Madrid (85.4 years) and Navarra (84.8 years), with the Finnish region of the Aland Islands (84.6 years) in fourth place.

Behind are Castilla y León (84.3 years), the Italian autonomous province of Trento (84.2), Sweden’s Stockholm (84.1) and three other Spanish regions: Cantabria and the Basque Country (both with 84.0), and Galicia (83.9).

In contrast, the bottom of the list is Bulgaria, as the four regions with the lowest life expectancy are the Bulgarian regions Severozapaden (69.7 years), Severen tsentralen (70.4), Yugoiztochen (71.0) and Severoiztochen (71.2).

Life expectancy by sex

Eurostat also published data by sex, showing that the highest life expectancy at birth for women was recorded in the Community of Madrid (88.2 years), followed by five other regions of Spain: Navarra (87.6 years), Castilla y León (87.5 years), Cantabria (87.1 years), Galicia and the Basque Country (both 87.0 years).

In the case of men, the highest life expectancy was recorded in the autonomous island region of Åland, Finland (82.8 years). In second place was the Community of Madrid (82.2 years), with the Swedish region of Stockholm (82.1) in second place and Navarre (81.9) in third place.
