“The growth of bilateral trade and joint projects in the field of Defense, encourage us to continue deepening our relationship with Spain,” said the new Ambassador of Turkey, Nüket Küçükel Ezberci, during the reception she offered to commemorate the centenary of the Turkish Republic.

In her first public appearance, the ambassador congratulated herself on the fact that Spain currently holds the six-month presidency of the European Union and particularly thanked it for having “sincerely supported Turkey’s accession” to the community club from the beginning.

For this reason, Ezberci did not hesitate to describe as “excellent” the relations between the two countries – the “fortresses that guard the east and west of the Mediterranean”, she said – at the same time as she expressed her satisfaction at “being able to carry out my functions in a friendly country”.

In addition to the centenary of the Republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 29, 1923, the ambassador noted that this year also marks 500 years since the establishment of Turkey’s Foreign Ministry. And she assured that, in the midst of the current conflicts, “Turkey is a country that seeks solutions to problems in order to achieve a just and lasting peace” in conflicts such as the Middle East.

During the reception, a congratulatory speech by the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was read out. He stressed that “Turkey is the protector of the helpless all over the world” and warned the “internal and external enemies” that “despite them, we will manage to achieve all our goals” and “prepare the Republic to enter our second century”.

In the presence of numerous ambassadors and civil and military authorities of the Spanish Government -among them the Secretary of State for Latin America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World, Juan Fernández Trigo, and the director of the CNI, Esperanza Casteleiro– Nüket Ezberci highlighted “the excellent reception I have had since the first day” from the Spanish Administration.

The ambassador also summoned on Sunday half a thousand Turkish citizens residing in Spain to celebrate the Day of the Republic at her official residence. The Embassy has planned a series of cultural, institutional and gastronomic events until the end of the year and also throughout 2024, as already reported by The Diplomat.
