A sample of five pieces created by Taiwanese choreographers Lin Ting-Syu, Ting-Yu Chen, Po-Cheng Tsai, Kuo Chueh-Kai and Hung-Chung Lai, are the protagonists of the programme Masdanza Taiwan, which the Taiwanese Ministry of Culture and the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei in Spain, in collaboration with the International Contemporary Dance Festival Masdanza, present next Saturday 28 October at 19.30 at the Teatro Cuyás in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Five works representing the diversity and depth of Taiwanese contemporary dance have been carefully selected for this programme. The first to take the stage will be Somewhere Over The Rainbow, which shows the temporal concepts of present, past and future. From the city of Kaohsiung comes The Body That Does Not Exist, which combines the concepts of Taiwanese gods and ghosts, rituals and elements that create a uniquely Taiwanese atmosphere. Flow draws on martial arts as an image of restraint and moderation. Birdy uses a traditional opera prop with long feathers that represents status and tells the story of human freedom and restraint and Taiwan’s international situation. And Formless Erosion reproduces actions of daily life to interpret how the mountain landscape and society of Taiwan are formed.
Such artistic and cultural exchanges allow Taiwan’s contemporary dance platforms to continue to promote Taiwanese contemporary dance art and tradition abroad, showcasing new talents and the latest body and movement research developed on the island. At the same time, it aims to invite dance professionals from Spain to travel to Taiwan and present the results to large international audiences.
Directed by the choreographer and dancer Natalia Medina, the Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has become a benchmark for the creation and dissemination of contemporary dance on the international scene over the course of its many editions.
