This evening at 7.30 p.m., the Theatre of the Instituto Francés in Madrid will host a round table discussion entitled Cities of the Future, which will bring together architects, researchers, institutional representatives and local actors involved in innovative urban projects. The event will be held in Spanish and French with simultaneous interpretation.
During the event, the main challenges facing the cities of today and tomorrow will be discussed. Speakers will explore how science, creativity, innovation and the exchange of knowledge and best practices help to rethink urban space and the way we live in it.
More than half of humanity lives in cities. The urban population will continue to grow in the coming decades, from 56% of the global total in 2021 to 68% in 2050, according to the latest UN report. To cope with this urban expansion, in a context of climate change, it is necessary to adapt and evolve towards an urban model in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. What will the cities of tomorrow be like? How can we make urban spaces fair and sustainable places of coexistence?
Speakers will include Valérie Flicoteaux-Melling, Vice-President of the Conseil National de l’Ordre des Architectes, in charge of Ecological Transition; Fco. Javier Neila González, Professor of Bioclimatic Architecture and Environmental Conditioning at the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and Ramón Cubián Martínez, Director General of Land and Head of the Madrid Nuevo Norte Office at the Regional Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture and the Interior of the Community of Madrid. The round table will be moderated by Francisco Javier González-González, Professor of Urban Planning at the Department of Architecture of the School of Architecture of the European University (UE).
