Next Wednesday 25th October, from 7 to 8.30 p.m., the Casa Asia Centre-Madrid (Calle Mayor, 69) and the Spanish Institute of Strategic Studies (IEEE) are organising the round table The Indo-Pacific. Dynamics in East Asia, which is intended as a space for analysis of East Asia as the epitome of geopolitical tensions in the Eurasian and Indo-Pacific area.
The event will feature the launch of the IEEE East Asia Strategy Notebook, which addresses the main challenges in the region. Three of the most complex security issues are in the region: 1) North Korea and its nuclear programme; 2) The Taiwan Strait; and 3) The South China Sea. However, if these issues are properly addressed, East Asia can become a region of peace and growth. The world’s second and third largest economies are in the region; South Korea, the world’s twelfth largest economy, has seen spectacular development in all domains in recent decades despite crises on the Korean Peninsula. The significant soft power of the states in the region and the contribution they can make to the multilateral order are other reasons to hope for a reduction of the current tensions.
The event will be presented by Emilio de Miguel, Ambassador at Large for the Indo-Pacific and Director of the Casa Asia-Madrid Centre and coordinator of the East Asia Strategy Paper. General Francisco José Dacoba, Director of the IEEE, and Javier Fernández, IEEE analyst and one of the authors of the Notebook, will participate. Registration is open at this link.
