The Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei, in collaboration with the Homesession Art Space and Artist Residence in Barcelona, present on 26 and 27 October the solo exhibition of the artist Jia-Ling Hsu, titled If Today Were Your Last Day, as a result of her artist residency. The opening will take place on 26 October from 6pm to 9pm at Homesession’s headquarters (Carrer de la Creu dels Molers 15, Barcelona).

Using photography, writing and video as her main media, the artist Jia-Ling Hsu presents her project, the result of the last chapter of the artist’s memories of her everyday experiences, mainly related to her experiences with her family of origin, through which she explores notions of home and care.

Through this site-specific exhibition, the artist harmonises her personal experiences with the architecture and the multifunctionality of the space in the Homesession residence, which serves as a workshop, meeting place and exhibition space, where she has lived and researched for two months in the city of Barcelona. This practice reflects the artist’s circumstances where work is an integral part of life and life an integral part of work.

In her work, Jia-Ling Hsu explores the concept of “freedom” and “repression” within each individual, which are linked to family relationships, religious beliefs and affective experiences. Her projects are an emotional response to her life circumstances. Her work is a collage on the timeline that combines multiple media such as action, object art, the written/spoken/on-site word that unfolds with a fragmented and open-ended narrative.
