Under the coordination and organisation of the Instituto Seda España, Casa Mediterráneo in Alicante is holding the 5th Silk Road Conference on Women in the Cultures of the Mediterranean on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
This fifth edition brings together women who, from different positions in society, dedicate their efforts to saving the seas and oceans, particularly the Mediterranean, from the risks and evils that today endanger their survival.
They will talk about pollution from agricultural, industrial and urban waste, the desertification of the basins of the southern Mediterranean countries, large-scale fishing to the detriment of small-scale fishing, plastics and micro-plastics, mass tourism and the pollution of its beaches, maritime transport and pollution, both maritime and atmospheric and noise pollution, and the speed of large ships (80% of the deaths of marine mammals in the Mediterranean are caused by collisions with large ships).
There will also be a discussion on tourism and its responsibility for pollution and the measures that are being implemented through sustainable tourism to protect the seabed and its flora and fauna.
The fight against climate change and the protection of the environment is a task for everyone, but today the focus is on women, specifically those who make the preservation of nature their banner as their sole objective: to leave a better world for future generations.
