The Iranian Embassy in Spain, in a statement sent to The Diplomat, points out that the European Union is “one of the parties that has an outstanding moral, political and legal responsibility” to find a way out of the Palestinian issue. It adds that “Spain, which holds the regular presidency of the EU, with its deep knowledge of the culture of the region and of the Palestinian question, is in the best position to assist the European Union in this field.”
The communiqué proposes “a democratic and just solution based on the most obvious principle of democracy: every person one vote, so that genuine Palestinians of any religion – Jewish, Christian, Muslim – freely and democratically exercise their right to self-determination and decide on the future of the country and its government.”
According to the Iranian Embassy, the “policy of appeasement with the Zionist regime” will not help peace but “will make this regime more daring”. In their view, “peace in occupied Palestine will only be achieved by realizing the rights of the displaced and innocent Palestinian people and respecting the obvious principles of international law.”
Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the ‘Nakba’, the statement recalls that, in all this time, “the United Nations and the Security Council have issued dozens of resolutions, but the Palestinian people have witnessed, with tearful eyes, more than 50 times, the veto of the United States as the main supporter of this occupation and aggression”.
Finally it assures that “the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate closely with any country and institution that is determined to help the Palestinian people achieve the aforementioned goals and principles.”
The statement, which begins by noting that “Palestinians have been witnessing the repetition of the Nakba of occupation, aggression and brutality of the aggressor soldiers for 27,375 days,” argues that “the uprising of the Palestinian nation is nothing but a natural reaction of an oppressed and occupied nation against aggression, occupation and insult to Muslim and Christian sanctities.”
