The war between Israel and Hamas terrorists was also present at the National Day celebrations. The Minister for Social Rights and Agenda 2023, Ione Belarra, took the opportunity to wear a scarf made by Palestinian women from Hebron over her black dress.
Podemos, Belarra’s party, which has avoided condemning the Hamas attack against Israeli civilians, took it upon itself to inform the media that the minister was wearing this scarf as “a sign of solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of the continued apartheid to which they are subjected by Israel and the escalation of violence in recent days”.
Belarra explained on her Instagram account that the scarf was lent to her by her party colleague Isa Serra, and after stating that “the State of Israel has been subjecting the Palestinian people for decades to an occupation and apartheid that continues to leave us speechless”, she added: “Let those who can raise their voices, even in the face of this ferocious and hypocritical media unanimity that tries to convince us that some lives are worthwhile and others are not because they are “animals”.
The minister also took advantage of the 12 October holiday to write: “Our country should seriously consider not commemorating its national day on the anniversary of a genocide against the peoples of Latin America”.
