This evening at 8:00 p.m., Casa Árabe is presenting an exhibition entitled The Nile is more than a river, by artist María Primo, the result of an artistic residency which has brought her closer to the life of the Nile and the threats to the river’s ecosystem.
Beforehand, at 7 p.m., there will be a round table discussion on the creative process of the exhibition with the participation of the artist, María Primo, the curator Blanca de la Torre and the graphic designer Diego Lara.
The curator of the exhibition, Blanca de la Torre, presents it as follows: “Following research in Luxor, Egypt, María Primo approaches the Nile to listen to some of the stories it contains: mythological tales, pharaoh women, tomb robbers, ancestral constructions and vernacular architecture. In doing so, it also encounters serious threats, such as the deterioration caused to the heritage by the impact of the climate crisis and mass tourism”.
The exhibition, which will be on show until 28 January, is structured in interconnected conceptual blocks with which the artist navigates with agility between different temporalities that take us from remote centuries to the present, making use of a sophisticated fusion between fiction and reality, legends and historical episodes. All of this serves to construct a narrative that brings to the table our relationship with nature and the complex interconnectedness that underlies the ecological emergency.
María Primo is a photographer and visual artist with a background in anthropology and the environment. Since 2002, she lives and works in Madrid as a freelance photographer combining her personal projects with commissioned work and teaching.
