Author: Abdelá Taia.
The theatre of the Instituto Francés of Madrid will witness this evening at 7pm the literary meeting with the writer Abdelá Taia, who will present his latest novel, Vivir a tu luz (Living in your light). Free admission with reservation. Event in French with simultaneous translation.
Living in your light, which traces three different moments in the life of Malika, a Moroccan woman from the countryside: from 1954 to 1999, from French colonisation to the death of King Hassan II. Abdelá Taia will be in dialogue with the journalist Carla Fibla García-Sala.
It is Malika who speaks and who recounts in first person her strategies for escaping the injustices of history. To survive. To have her own little place.
Abdelá Taia’s political and aesthetic decision to make his mother the protagonist of his latest novel in order to portray the life she endured of struggle and suffering, has the aim of introducing into literature an archetype of woman who is usually excluded, dignifying the role played in history by the profile of the poor, uneducated and solitary woman. In this way, she seeks to “glorify” her, but not by romanticising poverty, but as a resilient figure who has come out ahead despite the difficulties.
Abdelá Taia (Salé, 1973) is a French-language Moroccan writer, playwright and filmmaker. After studying at the Mohamed V University in Rabat, he settled in Paris, where he completed his doctorate at the Sorbonne University and began his literary career. Always attentive to Moroccan and Arab political news, he often writes opinion articles for the international press. He currently lives in Paris.
