The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, held a telephone conversation yesterday with his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, with whom he discussed, among other issues, the enlargement of the EU during the Spanish Presidency and the migration situation in Europe.

“Productive conversation with my good friend, the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock,” Albares declared through his official account on the social network X, the former Twitter. “We discussed EU enlargement during our EU Council Presidency and the migration situation in Europe,” he continued. “We are looking for European answers to European challenges,” he concluded.

Last April, Albares and Baerbock demanded in Berlin, after a bilateral meeting at the headquarters of the German Foreign Ministry to address the priorities of the Spanish Presidency, more “solidarity” between all EU countries on migration issues because “solidarity is indivisible” and “has to be extended to all EU states, it cannot be à la carte”.

In addition, yesterday’s conversation between the two ministers took place on the eve of the informal ministerial meeting that, from today until tomorrow, will be held in Murcia by the General Affairs Council of the EU, in the framework of the Spanish Presidency. At this meeting, the enlargement of the European Union will be discussed and the report commissioned by the French and German governments from a dozen experts, which warns that “the European Union is not ready to welcome new members, neither institutionally nor politically”, will be analyzed.
