Her Majesty Margarita of Romania, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, visited Spain this week, accompanied by her husband, Prince Radu, during which she had an intense agenda, including participation in debates and meetings with various Spanish authorities.
Margarita has held the title of Custodian of the Romanian Crown since 2017, when, upon the death of her father, Michael I of Romania, she became the head of the Romanian Royal Household, playing on numerous occasions an important role as ambassador of her country, which is now a Republic.
During their stay in our country, The Diplomat has learned, Margarita and Radu held a private meeting at the Zarzuela Palace with Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain.
The visit to Spain, which began last Monday and will last until Thursday, coincided with the six-month European Presidency of our country and, according to the Romanian Embassy in Madrid, was aimed at highlighting Romania’s importance in the European Union and NATO, as well as supporting its European aspirations, both institutionally and in Spanish society.
On the first day of her stay in Spain, Margarita of Romania took part in a round table discussion at the Elcano Royal Institute entitled: “Analysis of the security problems on Europe’s eastern border: Ukraine, Moldova, the Black Sea area”, attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the diplomatic corps, researchers, academics and students.
On the same day, the representatives of the Royal House went to the European Union Satellite Centre (EU SATCEN) where they held a meeting with its director, Ambassador Sorin Ducaru, representatives of the Agency’s management and Romanian specialists.
On Wednesday, they planted a Romanian peony (Paeonia peregrina) in the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, a symbol of prosperity and beauty, declared the national flower of Romania in 2022, which is part of a donation from the Romanian Embassy, with the collaboration of the University of Agronomic and Veterinary Sciences of Bucharest.
Margarita and the Prince Consort also visited the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, where they held a meeting with 120 members of the Romanian and Moldavian communities, attended by the Ambassador of Romania, George Bologan, and the Ambassador of Moldavia, Eugen Revenco, together with the Regional Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration of the Community, Miguel Ángel García Martín.
The meeting was opened by the Romanian ambassador, who quoted the words of King MIchael I to the Romanian Parliament in 2011: “The world of tomorrow cannot exist without morality, faith and memory. Cynicism, petty interests and cowardice must not occupy our lives. It is up to us alone to make the country stable, prosperous and admired in the world. I do not see today’s Romania as a legacy from our parents, but as a country that we borrow from our children”.
The royal couple’s agenda also included a visit to the Guardia Civil Command, where they met with the Director General, Leonardo Marcos González, and a trip to Toledo.
