The Spanish government yesterday “firmly” condemned the use of armed force against the Karabakh region and regretted the loss of human lives, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Azerbaijan yesterday launched a military operation in Nagorno Karabakh, an Armenian-majority region within the country, which in part remains under the control of pro-Armenian secessionists.
“Spain,” the statement added, “supports the mediation of the European Union and calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to cease military activity immediately and resume dialogue to reach a peaceful resolution in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”
The Armenian embassy yesterday accused the Azerbaijani government of carrying out “large-scale military aggression against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh with the aim of completing its policy of ethnic cleansing against Armenians.”
The statement added that due to these facts, the Embassy “has decided to postpone the reception dedicated to the National Holiday”, scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, in Madrid.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced “local anti-terrorist actions” in the region following the death of six people, including four policemen, in an incident for which Baku blames an Armenian sabotage group. According to the Azerbaijani presidential administration, quoted by the state news agency, the measures initiated will go “to the end” as long as the Armenian military units do not surrender and hand over their weapons.
