The Diplomat
The Mayor of San Roque and Socialist MP for Cadiz, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, yesterday defended the visit he made last Friday to Gibraltar to meet the Rock’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, a gesture that has not gone down well with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was not aware of the initiative.
Without alluding to the unease reported yesterday by The Diplomat, Ruiz Boix insisted that the purpose of the meeting with Picardo was to seek an area of shared prosperity, in all aspects, including the waters. According to the mayor of San Roque, it is a question of “resolving any specific episodes of conflict through consensus, responsibility and good relations”, something he believes that the PP leaders in the town councils of Campo de Gibraltar will also agree on.
For this reason, he asked the new president of the Association of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, the PP councillor in the City Council of Algeciras, Susana Pérez Custodio, to maintain the discourse of consensus of her investiture and not to follow the indications of the mayor of Algeciras and popular senator, José Ignacio Landaluce, who has a more critical stance with the attitude of the Gibraltarian authorities. Ruiz Boix accused Landaluce of arrogating to himself a leading role in issues that affect bilateral relations between Spain and the United Kingdom.
