The Fundación Carlos de Amberes (Calle Claudio Coello, 99) is organising a round table discussion this evening in its auditorium at 7 p.m. entitled 1985-2023. Spanish women MEPs. An intergenerational encounter. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.

The event is part of the programme Nosotras, las Europeas. Feminism and democratic memory in the construction of Europe, organised by the Ministry of the Presidency to commemorate the current Spanish Presidency of the EU.

This programme is a project made up of several round tables (Fundación Carlos de Amberes and Círculo de Bellas Artes) and an exhibition (Fundación Diario Madrid) which are built around the transversal axis of European democratic memory understood as feminist memory, creating a space and an experience of vindication of European values and the rediscovery of the role of women in the construction of the EU.

This afternoon’s debate will reflect on the long road travelled by Spanish women MEPs from the Spanish Cortes to the European Parliament in Strasbourg and Brussels, from those five pioneers in 1986 to the 22 Spanish women MEPs who have held seats since the 2019 elections.

In general, topics such as the fight for equality in the European institutions, feminist genealogy and the future of women in European politics and women journalists in Europe past and present will be discussed. Participating in the round table will be Concepció Ferrer i Casals, former Member of the European Parliament and Romance philologist; Cristina Gutiérrez-Cortines Corral, former Member of the European Parliament and Professor of Art History; Ludivina García Arias, Member of the European Parliament, Member of Congress and historian; and Eugenia Rodríguez Palop, Member of the European Parliament, jurist, professor, researcher, essayist and writer. The journalist and writer Nativel Preciado will moderate the debate.
