The Diplomat
The Local Police of Sant Cugat del Vallès and the Mossos d’Esquadra arrested last week the son of the Chilean consul in Barcelona, accused of committing thefts with the consulate’s official car, according to Efe.
The online newspaper El Taquígrafo revealed on Wednesday that on Friday the 8th, local police officers in Sant Cugat (Barcelona) arrested six individuals -five Spaniards and one Chilean- for travelling in a five-seater car. The vehicle attracted the attention of the officers, not only because of the number of occupants, but also because it had diplomatic plates. The occupants of the vehicle tried to evade the police ‘stop’, initiating a dangerous pursuit which ended with the diplomatic car crashing.
In a joint action by the local police and the Mossos, the young men were arrested and, after being taken to court, were released with charges, while the vehicle remained in police custody.
The Catalan police have discovered that, in addition to the attempted robbery of the phone shop, they are also implicated in other robberies committed during the summer, apparently using the same vehicle.
Chile has a Consulate General in Barcelona, headed by Jaime Ferraz Aravena, a thirty-year diplomat who has previously been posted in several countries.
