Khatia Buniatishvili returns to the Auditorio Nacional with Fundación Scherzo

As part of its Great Performers Series, the Fundación Scherzo opens its season on Wednesday 20 September with a concert in the symphonic hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música at 7.30 p.m. by the French-Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili.

This muse of the piano returns to the Auditorio four years after her last concert in Madrid, to immerse the listener in a trance through some of the great romantic mysteries. With impeccable technical qualities, unparalleled virtuosity and a distinctive and personal interpretation, Buniatishvili has become one of the great stars of modern piano.

For this date in Madrid, the first after the pandemic, the performer presents a programme with a romantic perspective, beginning with F. Liszt’s arrangement of J. S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A minor BWV 543 / S 462. He will then perform two of the great Beethovian sonatas: the Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor op. 31 No. 2 “The Tempest” and the Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor op. 57 “Apassionata”, two works in which the Bonn composer makes a nod to Elizabethan theatre in the purest Shakespearean style. From L. van Beethoven we move on to F. Liszt’s arrangements of some of F. Schubert’s most famous lieder: Ständchen S 560, Gretchen am Spinnrade S 558 no. 8 and Erlkönig S 558 no. 4.

The emblematic Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 in D flat major S 244 by F. Liszt, of an almost devilish virtuosity, could not be missing in this journey into the depths of the romantic dream. The concert will conclude with one of the works that changed the paradigm of music: Igor Stravinsky’s own arrangements of three movements from the ballet Petrushka. This concert is dedicated to the memory of Alicia de Larrocha, as part of the centenary celebrations of her birth. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
