The European Commission yesterday avoided any pronouncement on the possible amnesty to the Catalan pro-independence leaders of the procés and warned that it is an “internal matter” of Spain that, in any case, must be “addressed within the constitutional order”.
“Our position is well known: it is an internal matter for Spain, it simply must be addressed within the constitutional order, including the question of possible pardons,” said the EU spokesman for Justice, Christian Wigand, on the amnesty demanded by Junts to the acting president, Pedro Sánchez, to support his investiture, according to the agency Europa Press.
Shortly before, the European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, declared in Madrid to the press that the Commission will not pronounce itself on internal Spanish issues and will only analyze the possible amnesty law when it has a draft. “In the European Commission we first want to read documents before doing anything”, so “it is too early” to make a pronouncement, he added.
