The Instituto Francés of Madrid and the Casa de Velázquez invite you this evening at 19.30 to the opening of the exhibition La noche de la frontera, in the Gallery of the Institute. The exhibition will be on display until 27 October.
The exhibition, curated on this occasion by the art historian Inés Muñozcano, will present works by the artists Milena Charbit, Arash Fayez, Jeanne Lafon, Olivia Funes Lastra and Assoukrou Poupoint.
The exhibition presents recent works by three artists who have been in residence at Casa de Velázquez in the 2022 and 2023 academic years, and two who will enjoy the scholarship from September 2023. The five artists approach the notion of the border in their work from different prisms that go beyond the geographical facet and challenge their identity as border.
La noche de la frontera is proposed as a journey along different symbolic borders. In them, the generative capacity of the place in between is revealed, bringing about unexpected encounters and being the stage for interdisciplinary experiences. The proposal explores the poetic meaning also through etymology, where the Greek word “metaphor” shares origin with “transfer” or “displacement”, and reflects the intrinsic relationship between creativity and transfer. In this context, it emphasises the difficulty of transcending boundaries, and the effort required to adapt to this space that lacks clear references, in order to appreciate its potential and become part of it.
