Acciona Energy has closed the acquisition of the Forty Mile wind project, which has 280 megawatts (MW) of power and a potential capacity of 400 MW, located in the county of Forty Mile No.8 in Alberta (Canada).
According to Renewable Energy Systems Canada (RES), the company has specified that it will continue to be part of the project as a constructor despite its sale.
For its part, Acciona Energy announced in July that it will collaborate in its construction and that it will begin energy operations in early 2025.
“With a total capacity of 400 MW, Forty Mile will be the largest wind farm in Canada and would generate enough energy to power nearly 230,000 Albertan homes,” explained RES Canada. The project will employ around 250 people during the peak construction period later this year.
“This acquisition aligns with our long-term vision to expand Acciona Energy’s renewable portfolio and underscores our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future,” explained Joaquin Castillo, CEO of Acciona North America.
According to Castillo, “the project not only strengthens our operational footprint but also reinforces our commitment to local communities”. “Through our Social Impact Management programme, Acciona Energy will reinvest a portion of its annual revenues to support education, wellness and environmental programmes in the local community,” he added.
The main power supply will go to Cenovus Energy, a Canadian-based energy company, through a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) as part of its strategy to offset a portion of its emissions related to the electricity it uses in its operations.
The remainder of the supply from the Forty Mile project will contribute clean energy to commercial energy markets and offset Alberta’s carbon emissions.
