The Diplomat
Técnicas Reunidas yesterday mourned the death, at the age of 75, of former US Congressman William Blaine Richardson (Bill Richardson), a member of the Spanish engineering company’s board of directors since June 2011.
In a letter to the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV), Técnicas Reunidas regrets the death of its director, which occurred last Friday, and thanks him for his “dedication and contribution” in the performance of his duties, while conveying its condolences to his family.
Richardson received a B.A. in Political Science from Tufts University (Medford/Somerville) in 1970 and an M.A. in Foreign Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1971.
He was a member of the House of Representatives for the State of New Mexico (1983-97), US Ambassador to the United Nations (1997-1998), Secretary of State for Energy (1998-2001), Governor of the State of New Mexico for the first time in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, and Chairman of the International Advisory Board of Apco Worldwide.
The former New Mexico governor, who died in his sleep at his summer home in Massachusetts, was a key figure in US Democratic Party politics over the past three decades.
Richardson was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize last month for his work to secure the release of Americans abroad. The last case he worked on was that of US professional basketball player Brittney Griner, held in Russia.
Over the past three decades he has worked for the release of Americans in Bangladesh, North Korea, Sudan, Colombia and Iraq. To this end, he set up the Richardson Center, which also aims to promote world peace by mediating in countries with diplomatic conflicts.
