The Han-ul Gallery of the Centro Cultural Coreano (Paseo de la Castellana, 15, Madrid) is showing until 29 September the exhibition Mañana hará buen día, an exhibition of children’s illustrations by one of the most influential figures in the world of children’s books in Korea, Lee Myung-ae.
The exhibition organised by the Centre features a selection of the most outstanding and previously unpublished original illustrations from the works Mañana hará buen día (2020), which won the artist the acclaimed Golden Apples at The Biennial of Illustration Bratislava in 2021, as well as Plastic Island (2014), Vacation (2021) and Flower (2021). The latter reflect a multi-colour palette inspired by the landscape and based on traditional Korean tales.
The 40 illustrations that make up the exhibition showcase Lee’s varied style in which he explores everyday life, the problems we live with by addressing environmental pollution in Plastic Island, and in which he makes use of more than 20 types of materials, including hanji (traditional Korean paper). His works, aimed at all ages, are characterised by stories illustrated with short texts that condense the experiences of everyday life.
In parallel to the exhibition, a programme of workshops and talks has been designed for children, library professionals and the general public. Today and tomorrow, 2 September, the 4 Lunas team, made up of professionals in theatre and storytelling, will accompany the opening to provide visitors with a dynamic and enjoyable experience in discovering the works on display. This event is open to both children and all those interested in appreciating the art of reading books without words. More information about the opening event and other activities parallel to the exhibition on the Centre’s website.
