Acciona Energía, the Spanish energy company, has signed an agreement with energy entities of the Government of Aruba to work together to develop a “green hydrogen valley”.
The Spanish company will be responsible for working with these companies to develop, build and operate a green hydrogen plant powered by a renewable self-consumption project, Acciona said in a statement.
The electricity generated will be used to produce green hydrogen and the surplus will be fed into the local grid for use on the island to reduce consumption of imported fossil fuels.
The project will use land currently owned by the state-owned refining company Refineria di Aruba and water will be supplied by WEB Aruba, while ELMAR will manage the distribution and transmission of energy through the grid.
For its part, Acciona Energy will support the state energy companies with the deployment of the necessary infrastructure to build a renewable hydrogen ecosystem on the island and explore various complementary uses of this fuel, including export opportunities.
With this project, the Aruban government aims to move away from traditional energy sources, having set a target of establishing renewable energy as a primary source by 2050.
In the field of green hydrogen, in March 2022, Acciona Energy inaugurated its ‘Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca’ project, which included the construction of an electrolysis plant powered by two photovoltaic plants, as well as a green hydrogen refuelling station in Mallorca.
In addition, the company is developing an industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant in Navarra, which will start generating green hydrogen in 2025.
