“The yellow and blue flag has become a symbol of the struggle for freedom and independence of our homeland,” said the Ukrainian Ambassador to Spain, Sergiy Pohoreltsev, during the solemn ceremony of hoisting the Ukrainian national flag in the Plazuela de Lesya Ukrainka, in the vicinity of the Embassy.
The ceremony commemorating the National Flag Day of Ukraine was attended by representatives of the City Council and the Community of Madrid, the district of Hortaleza, as well as members of the large Ukrainian community in the Spanish capital.
Pohoreltsev stressed during his speech that “the time will come when our flag will fly over the whole territory of our country, over all the liberated lands of Ukraine”. He took advantage of his speech to “thank Spain for its extensive aid and support for Ukraine in the context of the Russian armed aggression”.
For his part, the Minister of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, Miguel Ángel García, said that “the Ukrainian flag symbolises not only the defence of the territorial integrity of a country but also an element of union of all those who defend peaceful coexistence, freedom and democracy”.
During a press conference afterwards, the ambassador insisted that “only by uniting our efforts will we have a chance of achieving peace”.
