The Council of Ministers yesterday authorised a credit transfer, in the amount of 30 million euros, from the budget of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation to the Ministry of Defence, to implement the Agreement dated 13 July 2023, for the execution of the 5G Base infrastructure programme for specific services of the CNI and for the creation of a 5G Cybersecurity Centre.
According to the Executive, this agreement was signed between the State Secretariat for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure and the National Intelligence Centre (CNI), in compliance with Component 15, Investment 6, of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The main objective of the 13 July agreement is for the CNI to deploy its own 5G network and to participate in the creation of a 5G security centre, with the aim of enhancing its own capabilities, increasing knowledge of 5G technology and its vulnerabilities, and thereby improving the security, speed, confidentiality and integrity of communications.
In return, the MAETD will make a financial contribution within the framework of the execution of the aforementioned Agreement, which will aim to cover the expenses generated by the aforementioned actions.
All these actions are part of Component 15 ‘Digital Connectivity, boosting cybersecurity and deployment of 5G’, of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and more specifically in Investment 6 ‘Deployment of 5G: networks, technological change and innovation’.
