Queen Letizia and the Infanta Sofia will attend the final of the women’s football World Cup between Spain and England next Sunday in Sydney, according to sources at the Royal Household, as reported to Europa Press.
The usual presence of members of the Royal Family on this type of occasion will not be able to fall to King Felipe VI in this case, given that he will foreseeably have to begin contacts with the different parliamentary groups between Friday and Monday to designate the candidate for President of the Government after the 23J elections, once the Cortes are constituted this Thursday.
At the end of June, the Queen went to the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas (Madrid) to watch the national team train and had the opportunity to talk to the players who have led Spain to its first women’s World Cup final, to whom she wished good luck in the tournament.
For her part, the Infanta Sofia had already had the opportunity to attend with Princess Leonor last summer’s match between the Spanish women’s national team and Denmark, in which a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022 was at stake.
After beating Sweden in the semi-finals on Tuesday, the King’s House congratulated the Spanish team on their “historic triumph”, celebrating the fact that the players are “just one step away from taking us to the very top, to be world champions”.
