The Diplomat
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has confirmed Philippe Lhuillier, who was first appointed to the post in 2017 by then Philippine head of state Rodrigo Duterte, as the country’s ambassador to Spain for the second time.
After the change in the Philippine presidency, the new president, Ferdinand Marcos, decided in July 2022 that Lhuillier would remain at the head of the Embassy in Madrid, given his diplomatic knowledge and the contacts he had made over the previous five years.
Last 19 July, Marcos informed Lhuillier that he had been reconfirmed in the post, which also includes the diplomatic representation of the Philippines to Andorra.
Philippe Jones Lhuillier, 77, arrived in Madrid five years ago, after having been ambassador to Portugal between 2012 and 2016 and to Italy between 1990 and 2010.
Before joining the diplomatic service, Lhuillier, who holds a degree in Management Science from De La Salle University in Manila, was president of the largest pawnshop chain in the Philippines, Cebuana Lhuillier Pawnshop.
In 2008, he was unanimously selected as one of the Twenty Outstanding Filipinos Abroad (TOFA) for promoting the image of Filipinos while serving as Philippine Ambassador to Rome.
The University of the Philippines also honoured Lhuillier by naming one of its lecture halls the Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier Lecture Hall.
