The Diplomat
The new representative of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Spain, Ambassador Vivia Chang, yesterday presided over the official award ceremony of the scholarships for Spanish students that the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) organises every year.
The ceremony, held in a restaurant in Madrid, was attended by this year’s new scholarship recipients, as well as former scholarship recipients from previous years.
Ambassador Chang made a special address to the new scholarship recipients, congratulating them and encouraging them not only to take advantage of their stay in Taiwan to complete their studies, but also to “enjoy the hospitality of the Taiwanese people, the beauty of our beautiful island, its cultural attractions and the rich and varied customs and traditions of Taiwan”.
In this year’s call, 16 Spanish students have managed to obtain the so-called Huayu Scholarship, to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, and three more have obtained the Taiwan Scholarship to study Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees.
Ambassador Chang stressed that for her this was a meeting with a “very special character”, as this was one of the first events since her recent arrival in Spain. “I hope that sooner rather than later,” she told the new scholarship holders, “it will be you who become young ambassadors, who will show the world what our country is like and continue with the important work of strengthening and deepening relations between our peoples.
The ambassador also had words for the previous scholarship recipients, whom she congratulated on successfully completing their academic objective, and thanked them for their interest in Taiwan. “I hope,” she added, “that you have enjoyed my country and that your stay there has been of benefit to you.
