In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Spain and China, the Centro Cultural de China and the Shenzhe Municipal Office of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports are organising this weekend, as part of the Veranos de la Villa programme, the Lion Dance “Double Luck”.
Tomorrow 4 August, in the Plaza Centro Cultural Paco de Lucía, on Saturday in the Plaza de Oriente and on Sunday in the Paseo del Prado between Plaza de Carlos V and Plaza de Cibeles (north road), at different times, will take place this dance called wǔshī, the name given to this traditional sport originating in China and which integrates dance, acrobatics, gymnastics and martial arts. During typical festivals, Chinese people all over the world dance the dragon and lion dances in order to ask for peace, good luck and prosperity. This ancient art has evolved and innovated over time and the Lion Dance on raised poles is a manifestation of this.
The Lion Dance and Martial Arts Company Huaide of Fuyong in Shenzhen, founded in 1962 and with more than 80 members, is in charge of discovering this ancient dance. It is one of the most prominent and active groups in the southern school of this ancient Chinese art and has been awarded in many national and international Lion Dance competitions.
