The World Jewish Congress, which has its headquarters in New York, has signed an agreement with Centro Sefarad-Israel for the organisation of the exhibition “The Golden Age of the Jews of Al Andalus”.
The signing of the agreement was reported last Saturday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), indicating that the exhibition will be held from September to December at the Centro Sefarad-Israel in Madrid.
The agreement was signed on the 10th lastr by Jaime Moreno Bau, Director of the Centro Sefarad-Israel, and Maram Stern, Executive Vice-President of the World Jewish Congress, which has undertaken to make a financial contribution of up to a maximum of 5,000 euros to finance the organisation, logistics and production costs of the exhibition.
The exhibition will bring to the public a series of documents and activities that will try to reflect the period that is considered the golden age of the Jews in Spain, during the Muslim domination of the peninsula, from the second half of the 8th century until the end of the 11th century. This golden age brought to the world some of the greatest Jewish philosophers, writers, poets, scientists and physicians.
The involvement of the World Jewish Congress in the organisation of the exhibition underlines the importance attached to it as the leading international organisation connecting and protecting Jewish communities around the world, in more than 100 countries.
The mission of the World Jewish Congress is to promote the unity and represent the interests of the Jewish people, as well as to ensure the continuity and development of their religious, spiritual, cultural and social heritage.
According to the BOE, the World Jewish Congress – the “diplomatic arm of the Jewish people” – has been active in countless campaigns since its creation in 1936 in Geneva (Switzerland), as highlighted in the BOE’s report on the signed agreement: advocating justice for Holocaust victims and their heirs and protecting the memory of the Holocaust; combating anti-Semitism and all forms of racism, raising public awareness of the dangers inherent in incitement to religious, racial or ethnic intolerance, oppression or persecution; promoting interfaith dialogue; supporting the State of Israel; and promoting gender equality, diversity and inclusion and engaging Jewish youth in community leadership.
