The fifteenth meeting of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat) will take place in Madrid from July 24-27, just a week after the summit of leaders of the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) is held in Brussels.
As reported by the European Parliament’s office in Madrid, the 150 EuroLat members – 75 MEPs and 75 representatives of Latin American and Caribbean parliaments – will have the opportunity to assess the results and conclusions of the summit, the first at the highest level since 2015.
The EuroLat Assembly will take place at the Senate headquarters. The opening will be attended by the President of the Senate, Ander Gil; the President of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet; and the co-presidents of EuroLat, MEP Javi López (S&D, Spain) and Colombian Congressman Óscar Darío Pérez.
Also scheduled to speak are the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan, and the acting Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares. A press conference will be held at the Senate on Wednesday, July 26.
In addition to the meetings of the different commissions that make up EuroLat, the agenda of the session includes a meeting of the Euro-Latin American Women’s Forum on Tuesday 25th, and a meeting with representatives of Latin American civil society on Wednesday 26th, focused on the importance of the Spanish language in the media and broadcasting of both continents.
Before traveling to Madrid, Javi López and Óscar Darío Pérez will participate in the EU-CELAC summit of Heads of State and Government (July 17-18 in Brussels), to whom they will convey a message from the Assembly. EuroLat has advocated in recent years the importance of resuming bi-regional dialogue at the highest level, interrupted in 2015.
