The Spanish government has granted humanitarian aid of 50,000 euros to Paraguay to combat the chikungunya epidemic in that country, according to an agreement adopted by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

In order to meet the needs of the population affected by the chikungunya epidemic, the first cases of which began in January 2023 in the Republic of Paraguay, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) decided to grant emergency humanitarian aid.

The aid consisted of sending funds to the AECID Technical Cooperation Office (OTC) in the Republic of Paraguay for the purchase, transport and distribution of medicines, materials and health equipment in line with the needs expressed by the Paraguayan authorities.
The total amount of the action was budgeted at a maximum of 50,000 euros, charged to the AECID budget.

The epidemic of chikungunya, a virus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, caused around 170 deaths in Paraguay from the time it was detected at the beginning of the year until the end of April, when it was brought under control. It was the largest chikungunya epidemic in Paraguay’s history.
